Yesterday, Sunday, while Ed, Michelle and Chazzy were birding the Breaks Park on the western side of the county, David Raines and I were birding the eastern part of the county. We started with Mullins Rd, a road that runs off the south side of Compton Mt and meets Rte 635 (Linn Camp). We then drove eastward along Rte 616 to Horse Ridge an area near the community of Peapatch. All of this area is included in our CBC circle and Horse Ridge is the highest point in the circle with an elevation of 2920 feet. Like the Talbotts we also found Black-throated Green Warblers, but only 2. They had 18 Blue-headed Vireos and we had 1. We found no Black-and-white Warblers but we did find our first of the season Barn Swallow on Horse Ridge and later in the evening we found our first of the season Blue-gray Gnatcatcher on the eastern side of Compton Mt. This big variation in numbers found in the two different areas of the county lends credence to the theory, that some of us in the bird club have, that most of the early spring migrants follow the 90 plus mile ridge of Pine Mountain northward from Tennessee into the Breaks Park. The first migrants seem to show up there first. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
