David, Great Find! That's a first for the area. Congratulations, and what a way for the boys scouts to earn their birding merit badge. After spending a couple of hours studying everything from flight feathers to bird songs inside the conference center @ the Breaks Park the 9 boys and I were more than ready for some outdoor birding. We walked around the general area of the center finding a few common winter birds-Robins & Titmouse & then walked to the upper hotel rooms for a good view of the river gorge. We really weren't seeing much. I played a Towhee call & got a quick response & then we spotted a large dark bird flying toward us from the direction of the towers. It's wings showed a good dihedral so I thought Turkey Vulture, but as it came closer we could all see the white under both wings & tail making it clearly an immature Golden Eagle. I told the boys how lucky they were because I had been birding the Breaks Park for over 40 years & this was my 1st Golden Eagle inside the park. We were truly blessed. DaveR/Breaks,VA
