The Bristol Bird Club enjoyed a large turnout of birders Tuesday to hear conservation biologist Nora Schubert discuss nearly a decade of field research with Golden-winged Warbler populations in the higher elevations of the Southern Blue Ridge of Northeast Tennessee. Nearly all of her talk was centered on years of work studying populations mainly on and around Roan Mountain and Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area. The chart at the left lists the various survey sites and some of the characteristics of important sites along he Roan Mountain Massif, such as ownership and elevation. There are 14 sites. She shared many well-presented graphics, including the one below which depicts the many Golden-winged Warbler concentrations located in the Roan Mountain area. She shared a research proposal which also includes needed field work assistance in the Roan area for those that might be interested, and survey assistance needed for a Golden-wing Blitz planned for this May on private and public lands in Tennessee. The Golden-wing Blitz will give special emphasis on public and private lands adjacent to the larger known concentrations of Golden-wings so that there will be a better understanding of the distribution and population size. The President appointed a three-person committee of Wilma Boy, Faye Wagers and John Hay to review the club's non-profit by-laws and prepare a document that will continue to guide the club and be our rules for operation and define all offices. A nominating committee will be appointed soon to present a slate of officers for consideration by the club in electing officers for 2012-2013. The election will be in May or June and new officers will take office at the club's annual picnic held at Steele Creek Park. The upcoming TOS / VSO Joint Spring Meeting to be held June 18-19-20 at the Holiday Inn in Johnson City was discussed with much detail. A show of hands indicated maybe 75 percent of those attending planned to participate in the meeting. Several have already volunteered to help with various aspects of the event. We need much help on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. If you wish to help, whether you are a member of the BBC or otherwise, simply contact Wallace Coffey at wallace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Discussion was held concerning the Evening With The Eaglets which the club hopes to pull off at the Sullivan County Bald Eagle nest on the South Fork Holston River. The turnout should be good as many birders have said they will attend and there is much excitement. Treasurer Janice Martin submitted a treasurer's report in handwriting to the President at the end of the meeting. On Jan 18 we had a balance of $373.32. We currently have a balance of $3,864.53. Most of the income is from membership dues and fees paid to register and participate in the upcoming TOS/VSO Meeting in Johnson City.
