Not sure if it was an employee or not but, one thing I learned while
working at another public range with rental guns, and going to the related
trade shows and a couple other similar establishments, is that across the
board this is not uncommon and that my facility had been very lucky to have
over 20 years in business without a similar incident. It would appear that
it is not all that uncommon for troubled individuals to go in, rent a gun,
fire a few down range and then turn the gun on themself. In at least one
incident the person turned the gun on a family member then on herself.
I had asked once at the old Smith & Wesson shooting sports center, during
Indoor Nationals, why their rental policy for non-permit holders stipulated
that said non-permit holder had to be accompanied by someone else, even if
the other person had no permit. The answer was that they felt someone
coming in with a friend was less likely to commit suicide with the rental
gun, and that it reduced the number of these occurances. Which would imply
it had happened more than once.
Of course, it is Hoffman's, and they have had more than one a.d. in every
store location they have had, and an instructor shoot himself in the leg in
front of students within the first few months of the range being open.
