Having represented a fair number of clients before the
Connecticut Board of Firearms Permit Examiners (BFPE), one common cause
of permit suspensions was the improper storage of a firearm particularly
a gun left in a car.
On one occasion I watched a man represent himself before the BFPE
in a license suspension matter where his gun, left in his car, was
stolen.
The licensee argued that he was now a victim twice; once when the
gun was taken and a second time when his carry permit was suspended
pending a hearing before the BFPE.
His claim was that the place he was entering had a posted "no firearms"
policy and he had no alternative safe storage.

This suspension period did not include the eighteen months the
licensee had to wait before getting a hearing before the Board.
In addition to the license suspension, the real nightmare for this gun
owner could be exposure to a civil law suit if the gun was later used to
injury some one.
The BFPE has ruled that the storage of the gun was negligent so
any civil law suit against the gun owner would be a slam-dunk.
The moral of the story is do not think storage of a firearm in a car,
even for a short period of time, is a good idea.
