Broxburn Academy are the first West Lothian school to win the Girls'
Football, Under 15 Scottish Shield, which came into existence in 1998.
Road to final: Round 2 beat Greenfaulds 6-0, Round 3 beat Madras College
9-0, Round 4 beat preston lodge 9-4, semis beat Lourdes Sec 6-2, Final beat
Banff 3-1.
Playing into the wind at Station Park, Forfar, the girls lost a goal against
the run of play at a corner kick.
In the second half, with the wind behind them the girls pulled back to
equalise through Emma McFadyen, who added a second goal with 15 minutes to
play. After Abbie McKay was pulled down when she was through on goal, Zoe
Evans then missed a penalty but scored a cracker of a goal a few minutes
later to seal the win.
HT, Peter Reid, and coach, Rab Swindells are very proud. The large group of
parents, staff and friends that travelled through to Forfar were delighted
for the girls. It was the team spirit, organisation, skill and determination
that won through. Goalkeeper, Tegayn Hamilton commanded her area, made
several excellent saves and her distribution invariably turned defence into
attack. Captain Mairead Brash, Nicole Aitken, Eloise Hagan and Rossha
Muirhead were solid at the back and pushed forward whenever possible to
support attacks. Vice captain, Ellie Muirhead, Morgan McCauley and Anna
Dickov dominated midfield, breaking up attacks. Anna Dickov was also a very
effective playmaker. On the rare occasions that she lost possession it was
temporary because invariably she chased back and regained possession.
Megan McLaren made an immediate impact when she came on as a substitute but
the part she played was cut short when she was injured in a a bad tackle.
This however seemed to be the catalyst that pulled the girls together as
they seemed determined to win for Megan, who watched the rest of the game
from the dugout.
Ellie Morgan, Emma Bell, Emily Grant and Shannon Green were late substitutes
and helped Broxburn remain dominant, running out comfortable winners.
Jessica McFadyen and and Aylee Ross, who both played big parts on the road
to the final were both injured but shared the team's delight in their
success.
The Broxburn girls are in a second, separate national final in Toryglen next
Tuesday. We wish them more success.
