It is that time of the year when all books need to be returned to library.
I am planning on stopping students from checking out books May 31st.
Our last day of school is June 14th, and I am not sure if I should allow
students to continue to check out until the end of May. Right now, I am
sending out overdue notices.
If you are a Lower School Librarian, please let me know when your deadline
that you stop having students check out before summer vacation.

At Live Oak, our last day is June 7. The week of May 15th, they can only
check out a single book if their record is clear. No books checked out the
week of May 22, which is our last week of library classes. That’s a week
and a half before the end of school. (The following week the school goes to
camp, so they really only miss a week in the library.) I send out overdues
every week in May and have contests (with popsicles) for every class who
gets all books back or has made made arrangements with me to replace lost

Wondering if anyone (particularly elementary schools) has tried to genrefy
your fiction section (or a combo)?
What were some genres you chose - how many subcategories did you create?
Approximately how long did it take you? Any advice on process?
Has it helped your students? (Did you feel it was worth it?)
I "dipped my toe in" a couple of years ago by creating a "Sports Central"
section with a combo of sports themed books - fiction, non-fiction, bios,
etc. all in one place. It has worked out nicely, but the WHOLE fiction
section is a little daunting.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

I have put all graphic novels in the 741.5 section; it's the most popular
section in the library, and fits appropriately with the drawing books, even
if it's fiction. I also have Early Readers, both F and NF, in one area,
and Spanish Language books in another. Otherwise, I am not a fan of
genrefication; students learn to search by subject/keyword to find specific
genre books.
I also really support the Dewey Decimal System; have you ever walked into a
bookstore and been able to find what you were looking for without asking
for help? And yet I can look up a book in any public library or elementary
school in the country and know exactly where to find it, all by myself.

a summer institute for 7th grade teachers.

- Evaluate the H-SS Framework

The one week institute, to be held at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

introduction of learning strategies to foster inquiry, literacy and
