I was surprised to hear some pushback from our Humanities staff when I told
them we would have access to ebooks and audiobooks next year. Their concern
is that many of them only want students to use a physical book for classes,
unless there is a compelling reason (LD) for them to do otherwise.
I get this from a pedagogical standpoint, and I want to be respectful of
their concerns. But I'm also super excited about OverDrive and want to be
sure we maximize this resource.
Has anyone else experienced this type of resistance from teaching faculty?
If so, how did you address it? Are there schools where you only use the
OverDrive resources for non-required reading? Any tips on how to roll out
this resource to students/families while being respectful of faculty
concerns?
It was one of those meetings where I went in blindly thinking everyone was
going to be as stoked as I was, and was caught completely off guard and
felt really disappointed afterward. I greatly appreciate any advice on how
to move forward.
