We did a middle school wide read twice. The first time, me and another
teacher selected a book for 5th and 6th to read and another book for 7th
and 8th to read. We came up with the discussion questions and structure for
the conversations and all students and faculty were required to
participate. I think it worked out well, even though it was mandatory.
The second time, I had a committee of students recommend a selection of
books. All the middles students were polled to choose the final book. It
was optional of whether or not to participate. It was valuable, but
ultimately only a few students participated and it felt too time consuming
compared to how many students opted in.
If we were to try this program again, I would probably choose aspects of
both iterations to implement it.
