We had Mitali Perkins come visit with our middle schoolers and she was
wonderful. Her parents lived in the Bay Area so she would visit them
periodically. If they are still living there, you may be able to get her to
visit when she’s already in town to see them. Lisa Brown visited with our Lower
and Middle School students, and the lunch she had with our High School Literary
Magazine staff was great fun. Robin Sloan Skyped with our faculty book club,
but I think he’d do well with high schoolers. We have an alum, Victoria
Loustalot, who wrote This Is How You Say Goodbye, a memoir that our juniors
read over the summer for English class. Victoria visits the area occasionally
and she has spoken with our high schoolers as well as to a larger group of
students, parents, and the community. She’s worked with my high school literary
magazine staff as well. I don’t know what her speaking schedule is these days,
but she may also be available.
It’s good to have this list. Even though we’re in Sacramento, the drive isn’t
so bad and the train ride is lovely as trains go, so having Bay Area writers
visit is usually cost effective for us.

I second Christian Robinson. He was great with K-5. An art lesson plus how
he gets ideas for the illustrations. Part of the lesson was hands on.

We have had some great speakers at Live Oak including Gene Yang, Mac
Barnett, Jennifer Holm, Yuyi Morales, and Christian Robinson. Books Inc.
sponsors our book fair and has always been very helpful in arranging
speakers. Best of luck! Jenny

Gene Yang (American Born Chinese) is an excellent speaker. Gene may still
live in the Bay Area. The following is from a generic reply that I recently
received:
"His speaking fee is $5,000 plus expenses (coach airfare, ground
transportation, hotel, and meals). Gene can speak to a variety of topics
(diversity, being an outsider, education and comics, the art of
storytelling: written and visual) and customize his presentation to your
students."

Hi all,
I am trying to plan some author visits for this Spring/Fall that would
appeal to either a middle school or high school audience. Being relatively
new to the area, I have few author connections. Has anyone had a good
experience/know anyone local who may be interested in doing a school visit?
Thanks for any help you can lend!
Best,
Jess
