Hi Margot,
This you might try checking out Queer Books for
Teens<http://queerbooksforteens.com/> which has a number of books published
between 2000 and 2020 that you can filter with different tags (genre, sexual
orientation, gender, ethnicity etc). There are also several “best of lists” to
narrow things down further. There is a Middle-Grade section too which may have
some less romance in them. There is also List of
Lists<https://listoflists.ischool.syr.edu/>, which compiles several different
diversity booklists. There are lists for gender identity and lists for LGBTQ+
identities. Both of these were made with ALA grant money, so they were created
by other librarians.
Hope that helps,
Tiffani

Hi Margot,
If you're open to considering a graphic novel, Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
might be a good fit. It was nominated for several awards and won the Harvey
Award (comic book). The novel tells the story of Tiến Phong, a second
generation American Vietnamese teenager, who helps his mother learn English
through fairy tales while struggling to tell her about his sexuality. It's a
lovely story with beautiful illustrations.

Hi all,
I'm looking for an excellent book for an entire 8th grade class to read and
study that engages with LGBTQIA+ characters and subjects, but not a romance per
se. Ideally published in the last few years.
(Though there are many wonderful middle-grade books, I'm looking for something
that skews just slightly older...)
Do you have favourites you can suggest? Possibly a book that would cross over
into 9th grade would also work...
thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Margot
