Dear Colleagues,

I've attached a flyer and an email for an upcoming program that may be of
interest to you and your school.  It's a lecture, Q&A and book signing with
Congressman and civil-rights activist John Lewis who will be speaking this
Saturday, Sept. 20th at 2 pm at the Calvary Presbyterian Church on civil
rights and the continuing march for equality.  The event is free for youth
and suggested donations $10. for adults.

Congressman Lewis is a powerful speaker who has dedicated his life to
promoting civil rights.   Adam Hochschild, a journalist, historian and
 co-founder of *Mother Jones*, will be moderating the program.

In addition, the photo exhibit "Civil Rights:  1963-1965" by Matt Herron
will be on display. Photojournalist Herron documented the Civil Rights
struggle in the Deep South for *Life, Look, Time *and *Newsweek*.  Matt
Herron published *Mississippi Eyes:  The Story and Photography of the
Southern Documentary Project *this year to honor the 50th Anniversary of
Freedom Summer.

powerful and in-depth discussion with Civil Rights leader John Lewis and
Andrew Aydin on the continuing struggle for equality, justice and freedom
for all.*



Congressman John Lewis of Georgia's 5th District, is an American icon, one
of the key figures of the Civil Rights Movement. His commitment to justice
and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper's farm to the
halls of Congress, from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on
Washington, and from being beaten by state troopers to receiving the Medal
of Freedom from the first African-American president.



Lewis was a leader in many of the most dramatic campaigns of the movement:
 the lunch counter sit-ins, the Freedom Rides and the March on
Washington where he gave a speech (he is now a sole surviving speaker of
the March) as well as the historic march in Selma, Alabama.  He has been an
apostle of nonviolent civil disobedience in his pursuit of justice and is
one of America's most courageous champions of human rights.



To inspire a new generation to engage in the continuing battle for human
rights, Congressman Lewis and Andrew Aydin recently authored *March: Book
One*, a graphic novel, on Lewis' lifelong struggle for civil and human
rights, and a meditation "on the distance traveled since the days of Jim
Crow and segregation."



National Book Award-nominated historian Adam Hochschild, moderator, is one
of the co-founders of *Mother Jones* magazine and author of many books
including *King Leopold's Ghost: a Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in
Colonial Africa*. He teaches at the Graduate School of Journalism at the UC
Berkeley.
