Christina I think I need to come visit SI! I like the whiteboards around a
table idea.
Another thing I plan to add is large plants that will serve as area
dividers. I saw something like this in a hotel atrium and really want to
try it.

As you mentioned, this is something we've been thinking about a lot at SI
as we begin to plan the future library that we'll build in the next five
years. What information I've collected has also informed our current
library and changes we are and will continue to make in the space we have.
Here are some of the things I dream of having in our future library:
- A glassed off floor or large section which is the silent work area.
Preferably this would be on a different floor so students make a cognizant
choice to enter the space and work silently. It shouldn't be the default
zone upon entry. This space should be equipped with individual study
cubbies and a reading nook with comfy chairs.
- In the main area, a large multipurpose glassed off room that
teachers can use for classes, groups and clubs can use for meetings, and
the development office can use for events.
- Lots and lots of collaborative tables throughout the main space,
each equipped with whiteboards.
- A series of glassed-off rooms equipped with good ventilation, noise
insulation, whiteboards, and large monitor screen in which groups could
collaborate on video projects, art projects, presentations, and other
projects that require noise and the ability of the whole group to see the
screen.
- Several very large flat screen monitors in the main area to use
instead of projection screens.
- Varied seating in the main area.
- An outdoor seating area with a coffee cart where students can work
and snack.
- A ton of natural light.
In the meantime, to make some smaller parts of this work in our current
space, we've begun weeding our collection ruthlessly to make room for more
collaborative space and individual study cubbies. We've created
checkout-able collaborative spaces built from a table with five chairs,
framed by a pair of double-sided rolling whiteboards. With four of the
whiteboards, we've been able to create three such spaces that are very
popular. We've got other things in the works, too--eliminating the giant
magazine display and replacing it with a more efficient (and better
looking) rotating magazine column, better signage, etc.
If you want a more specific description of how I'm collecting data to
inform our future library space, feel free to shoot me some questions.
I wish I could make it to the BAISL meeting next week and meet everybody,
but I can't come. Next year, I should have a more flexible schedule that
will allow me to attend BAISL events.

ask questions, and we have the socializers - many of whom want to snack. I
think you need areas for all three groups!
