Exactly, this is another method for Emergency Broadcast alerts. We still get
them all the time on TV and radio, usually at early hours of the morning. I
get it on Comcast cable at 2 AM all the time. I get a SMS on my cell phone
from the county (which I signed up for) as a CERT (Civilian Emergency
Response Team) member at least once a month. And I get real alerts the same
way as needed. We might as well have it set up so they can do it over our
cell phones, since this can be very area specific unlike TV or radio. All
they need to do is send the message to those cell sites that are in and
around the affected areas. A lot of the Universities are using a similar
system in case there is a problem on campus. Personally, I don't see this as
an infringement upon anything. The message informs you of something, that's
it. Read it and react or ignore it. This actually has little to do with
Barry, and when he is gone, whomever is in office then takes on the same
mantle of responsibility. The first time there is a message sent out that is
political or otherwise outside the scope of the charter for this
system...bat-a-bing! Want to know why the crime (and even murder) rates have
gone down? Cell phones. The FBI "we don't know why" is all crap. Cell
phones, cell phone cameras, security cameras, etc. Notification inward to
the emergency responders is now happening in seconds instead of minutes or
even longer. So turning this around and being able to send messages out to
cell phones should help in the same way. Remember, you can ALWAYS turn the
phone OFF.

This is just like the Emergency Alert System for TV & Radio.

The frequencies utilized by cell phone companies belong to the government
(public), and case law states the public has a right to be warned about
emergencies.

I am not a fan of this administration or that liberal dressed like a
conservative mayor of NYC Bloomberg. However, let's be practical folks.
Something like this might have mitigated the damage on 9-11, the Gulf Coast
during Katrina, or even in Joplin recently.

If something like this bothers you that much, give up your cell phone(s) and
or call/write your Congressional delegation. www.senate.gov and
www.house.gov

Put your time into something worth writing about and cross check ALL news
sources before getting too wound up over something.

Be safe,

Tony

Very quietly yesterday, the federal government announced a new "PLAN"
that gives President Obama "texting" powers over all U.S. cell
phones. Under the Federal Communications Commission "PLAN" (Personal
Localized Alerting Network), beginning next year cell phones "will be
required to be fitted with special chips to receive the alerts,"
reports the Telegraph. Local and state alerts will be able to be
blocked by users, but not texts from the
"Texter-In-Chief."
