Gilbert Gauthe Released From Galveston County Jail

HOUSTON -- One of the most infamous Catholic priest pedophiles will
soon be living in southeast Texas, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Sex offender Gilbert Gauthe, 64, was released from the Galveston
County Jail on Friday.
In 1985, Gauthe was convicted of 34 counts of child molestation and
possession of child pornography in Louisiana as a priest in the
diocese of Lafayette.
Then, after his first release, he was arrested again in La Marque.
His latest incarceration was for two years for failure to register as
a sex offender.
His new address, which is registered and public information by law,
is in Santa Fe.
Gauthe is reported to have abused as many as 100 children.
He will live next to Rhonda Strength, who babysits her six
grandchildren several times a week.
"Why'd they even let him out? I don't understand that," she said. "If
he's done that to 100 kids or even one, and then you go to another
one, no (he hasn't changed)."
When the case first came to light about Gauthe, he became one of the
first Catholic priests accused of sexually abusing multiple children,
and the first time the lurid details were made public.
In his initial case, Gauthe was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but
released after nine for good behavior.
Ten months later, he was arrested in Texas for molesting a 3-year-old boy.
In 2008, he was living in an RV in Galveston Island State Park when
La Marque police took him in for failure to register.
According to a spokesman with the Texas Department of Public Safety,
as long as Gauthe is not on probation or parole, there are no
restrictions on where he can choose to live.
The DPS said parents should protect their children by always keeping
tabs on who has access to them and make sure they know about good
touching and bad touching. And, never rely on a list or database to
protect children.
