The Mesa Astronomy/Geology Society is pleased to announce that Dr. Marc Buie of Lowell Observatory will be the featured speaker for our meeting Saturday October 11 at 7:00 pm. He will be speaking about Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. His major research interests are: Planetary science with emphasis on the outer solar system using ground-based facilities and the Hubble Space Telescope. Current work includes developing the first maps of Pluto and Charon's surface appearances and composition; study of objects that may be transitional between comets and planets/asteroids; and study of the ring systems around Saturn, Uranus and Neptune using stellar occultations. Location: Alta Vista Clubhouse located at 1444 N. Recker Road in Mesa. 7:00 pm All interested parties are encouraged to attend. Members are free, non-members $ 2.00. Special Announcement: Mt. Wilson I have been tentatively granted telescope time at Mt. Wilson on the 60" in the near future. The cost is rather prohibitive for one person at $ 900 for all night, dusk to dawn, that will include an operator. Half night is $ 450. But I am being allowed up to a maximum of 25 participants to join in this venture. This can be for visual only or if we bring along a CCD and/or spectrograph to attach to the scope those instruments will be allowed use also. (hey Rich and/or Chris ????) There is also a strong possibility that if students are included for educational purposes, say from ASU, that a possible two night stay could be at a reduced price for the second night. That is up to the discretion of the Director at present. This is a chance to actually use a professional telescope steeped in history and at a major observatory. Anyone with an interest please contact me off list for further details. If we get enough people to make the cost bearable I will proceed with scheduling the telescope time and logistics. This is not restricted to club members only.
