Hi, Saguaro Astronomy Clubâs first Meeting of the Year is on Friday, January 25th 7:30pm. The speaker will be Bruce Koehn, Research Scientist at Lowell Observatory. His lecture will be about the Lowell Observatory Amateur Research Initiative (LARI)âLowellâs ongoing program to recruit amateur astronomersâ assistance in astronomical research projects. Please take a minute to familiarize yourself with this program: http://www.lowell.edu/LARI_welcome.php . There are 9 projects listed that utilize the full range of amateur astronomy capabilitiesâwide field deep sky photography, blinking archived photos to discover asteroids, photometry, spectrometry, data mining for things like extra-solar planets, even identifying antique scientific instruments from way back when Mars had those canals⦠Bruce mentioned his talk may be relatively short. This will give us an excellent opportunity for a bit of an extended Show and Tell session. So, bring on those slides of the Antique Binocular Convention, your deep sky photos that knock the socks off of the HST, backyard observations of asteroid occultation, your light curves from other transient eventsâheck, bring it all onâeven that photo of your Grandmother who bought you your first rickety mount. SAC meetings are held at Grand Canyon University, on Camelback near 35th Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Directions may be found at our Website http://saguaroastro.org/content/Meetings.htm All are welcome to attend. You donât have to be a member to attend a meeting, but youâll want to join after you do. Please contact me and our President Michael Collins to put you in the cue for a show and tell, otherwise it will be shown on a time available basis.
