Jupiter and Mercury have made a close approach in the past couple days. On
the left is Mercury, nearly as bright as it gets in a twilight sky. Next to
it is Jupiter, just emerging into the morning sky, and nearly at its
faintest. The star at 4 o'clock from the pair is Antares, which isn't
typically associated with the month of December. Venus is also in the frame,
at upper right. These photos were taken within a couple hours of sunrise at
a site a few miles west of the Superstition Mountains, near Phoenix.
