Meade appears to be acquired by a Chinese company, Sunny Optical..

Subject: [AZ-Observing] Meade going out of business--maybe

I changed the name of this post since the original had a chopped off
web address and it got sidetracked into a weather discussion.

My first "real" telescope was a Meade model 856, an 8 inch Newtonian.
I saw a lot of the sky and photographed quite a bit with my old film
camera piggybacked onto it.

AJ had one also and kept it 20 years.

David Fredericksen had the 6 inch version of that same Newtonian and
mount.  He completed the Messier and Best double stars list with it.

Joe Goss saw a lot in his 10 inch Meade SCT.

Lynn Blackburn has a 5 inch Meade refractor that provides excellent
images.

There was a time when lots of club members had the Meade 125mm
Maksutovs and saw much with them.  For the money they were a fine
telescope both optically and electronically.

Curt Taylor and I both owned 7 inch Meade Maksutovs and both said that
they had the best optics of any telescope we ever owned.  Still to this
day.

I know that AJ and I treasured our Research Grade Erfle eyepieces and
used them for decades.  There are several club members who still have
them.

I still have my Meade model 4000 Ultra Wide Angle eyepieces, a complete
set.  I have yet to view through any modern eyepiece that makes me what
to sell them off and buy anything newer.

I can't begin to name all the Meade accessories of all types I have
used.  Diagonals, color filters, solar filters and more.

I believe that they have declined in quality over the past years, but
they still made lots of great telescopes over the years and do hope that
they recover.  If for no other reason to keep Celestron on their toes;-)

Clear skies;
Steve Coe
