I missed M74 but am positive the scope was aimed at the correct position. I used a low power eye piece that gave 60X and a 1 deg field. Not realizing this at the time, only after others were turning in their lists in the morning, but moderate power would have been better. For a fleeting moment I believed it was there, but it just wasn't long enough to be classified as an observation, so I waited a few seconds. And there it was again - only in a different place in the field of view. The a few seconds later it was there again - only in a third different place! During these few seconds the scope wasn't moved and it can't be in three different places! I followed the position down until the horizon began to appear in the six degree finder at which time I moved on. So what could we call this non-observation? Can't do averted-imagination because that is used for an actual observation. The others M77, M31, M32 and M110 were easily seen in the 14.5 inch f5.2 DOB.
