I look at shots like this, or peruse the same areas in my 18" at low power and begin to try and imagine the scale of our galaxy. This sort of view comes as close as I have managed. I try to communicate this sort of understanding at the many public events I do, and can't help but fail, the reality is too vast. Baade's window and the area around NGC6520/B86 is and old favorite.
