The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. but not by much! Just to report that as of 3:00 pm Sunday I am back home recovering from my leg infection nicely, enjoying my first Starbuck's in over a week. As some of you may have heard, I went into the Emergency Room at the Mayo Hospital in Scottsdale, AZ last Sunday night with a swollen, sore, and purplish-red right shin/calf. They admitted me immediately and started a massive IV assault with antibiotics and drugs. At first, we were not sure what we were up against, so I was cautioned that depending on what happened in the next 72 hours, I could either lose the leg below the knee, lose all the infected flesh on the leg, or just go through a cycle of normal healing. As it turned out, I had a Type-A Staph infection known as "cellulitis"-basically, a bad skin infection. But it is the type of thing that could just as easily have started eating the flesh below the surface, in which case the first two dire scenarios came to mind. I am doing quite well now-the leg is still sore and somewhat swollen, but the infection seems to be dead and the skin recovering (slowly). Lesson learned? No matter how small that scrape may seem on your arm or leg, watch it closely and don't let it get ahead of you! With Type-A Staph, you just never know. I got off lucky this time. To all who wrote, called, or sent up prayers and good thoughts, thanks! To the ASKC especially, you guys were just awesome. Although I will probably never again live in KC, I will ALWAYS be a member of the ASKC!
