With Saturday's mostly full moon, took in some of the things happening on the television and was passing thru CNN. There, in between suicide bombings and the passing of Queen Mum was a great little 5 minute spot on the subject of Light Pollution. Some very good graphics illustrating the problem including satellite maps of the earth surface by night were there. A good part was made at the KPNO visitors center with the 16" Meade in the background and a good explanation of the role model that Tucson can be. I looked to see if the IDA web address was present but did not see it. Another lowlight (no pun intended) was that the segment did seem to show the problem of light pollution as one for professional astronomers only and not a big consequence to the amateur. Shocking statistic, only a small percentage of us dwellers in the industrialized nations have ever seen the Milky Way, something less than 20 percent if I remember the line correctly. Just to show that there are random acts of excellence still present on the airwaves. Transcripts are on the CNN web site, search it under light pollution.
