Great News. The electronic billboard bill (SB 1138) is finally DEAD for the year! The "sine die" gavel came down at 5:50 P.M. and the Arizona State Senate has adjourned its 2003 Regular Session without taking a Final Read roll call vote on the bill. It has been water torture waiting for such a vote as the session dragged out for a full 62 days after it was originally scheduled to end. There was never any indication that the billboard lobby had ever come close to having the necessary votes. It is a true testimonial how citizen and institutional constituencies can be successful when well organized in the 30 legislative districts across the state. Thank you to everyone that contacted state legislators, particularly after the many repeated requests, including these entities that formally opposed the bill: Arizona Republic (Editorial) Arizona Daily Star (Two Editorials) Tucson Citizen (Editorial) Neighborhood Coalition of Greater Tucson Sierra Club 29th Street Coalition (Tucson) Southside Neighborhood Presidential Partnership (SNAPP; Tucson) Luz Social Services, Inc.
