Subject: bills 1218 and 1186.

Thought I would pass this on although it is no doubt past news by this time.
Everyone should be commended for doing their part in supporting Gabrielle and
her bill.

This is the first chance that I have had to sit down at my computer since the
passage of our bill. What wonderful news! It is always good to see the Arizona
Legislature do the right thing as we have done with passing SB 1218.

While this bill does not fix all of our lighting problems, it is a good step
forward in improving light pollution and inefficient energy usage from
municipal buildings and areas. Since Arizona is world famous for our astronomy,
it is encouraging that my fellow legislators are willing to support the
industry and to allow those of us who are interested in gazing at the night sky
a better opportunity to do so.

The bill will now go to Conference Committee where we will do some final clean
up and then it heads to the Governor. I would like to invite all of you that
have been so wonderful in assisting with the tremendous lobbying effort to the
bill signing ceremony which will probably take place sometime in April or May.
I will get you the exact time, date, and location.

This bill would not have been possible without the assistance of Mark Mayer
from the Tucson Neighborhood Coalition, Richard Green from Kitt Peak, David
Crawford. Scott Davis and others from the International Dark Sky Association,
Nadine Sapien and Guadalupe Valencia from the Arizona Senate, Todd Sanders from
the House of Representatives, Eddie Geiger from the League of Cities and Towns,
Scott Smith from the AZ Dept. of Administration, Kevin Biesty from the AZ Dept.
of Transportation, and Chris Luginbuehl from the U.S. Naval Observatory.
Special thanks to Randy Peterson from the East Valley Astronomy Club for coming
to testify as well to Tom Mozdzen, the East Valley Astronomy Club, the Saguaro
Astronomy Club, the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, the Phoenix
Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, Tenagra Observatories, the
Arizona Science Center, the Steward Observatory, the Arizona Earth Space
Research Club, Earth/Space Scientific Research Institute, Inc., the NOAO Gemini
Science Center, Whipple Observatory, High Knoll Observatory, and the Lowell
Observatory.

Most of all, this bill was made possible by your love and appreciation for the
night skies.

Thank you for helping to make Arizona a better place for all of us and for the
generations to come.

Sincerely,

Gabrielle Giffords

I support the pending legislation for dark skies. Light pollution is fast
taking over all of Arizona thus destroying one of the things this state is
noted for throughout the US and the world. That being it's astronomy legacy!

There is no need for blazing lights lighting up the entire sky. Take note of
Flagstaff as a model for constructive use of lighting. People there can not
only find their way around at night safely but can also see the heavens as they
were created.
