We were there in Casper for ASTROCON 2017. Great speakers and lots of fun
talking with astronomers and non-astronomers from all over the place. The
local people in Casper and at the college were very friendly, courteous and
helpful. ASTROCON had recruited great speakers on a wide range of topics and
there were more astronomy gear vendors than we have seen in any one place in a
long time.
Here are some of the pictures we took on eclipse day with our Canon T5i camera
using a TV85 telescope on a CGEM mount. Obviously some with solar filter and
some without. We were able to set up on the campus in an area with nice views
to the SE and NW. It was clear when the sun rose with just a few thin clouds
to the west. It turned into a race with a ribbon of those clouds racing toward
the sun and there was some evidence of the clouds during totality in the view.
By the time C4 grew near the sun was just a big bright smear in the clouds. So
not perfect but pretty darn good! Totality was something like 2 min 26 seconds
and we were basically dead center on the center line. The temperature dropped
12-15 degrees suddenly and it looked eerily black to the west as the shadow
raced toward us. It took 10-15 minutes afterward for the chill to wear off.
We were able to view the eclipse with 1x, 2x and 6x solar viewers and let the
MACBook Pro run the camera and all was good. The many hours of practice
running the whole sequence and practicing and practicing doing a solar
alignment was worth it.
We waited until Tuesday to head back to Gilbert AZ and did not encounter any
delays leaving the eclipse path. That is until we hit what I have been told is
normal traffic on I25 between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. That was very
un-fun but probably most all the eclipses had already passed by.
Cheers!
