Psychologist (Addictions Disorders Treatment Clinic) Overview The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, is an employer of choice with an emphasis on excellence in patient care, education and research. The Madison VAH is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and is physically connected to the University of Wisconsin Clinical Science Center, which includes the UW Hospital and Clinics. The FY08 research budget was approximately $3 million in VA funding and $8 million in non-VA funding. Patient Care The licensed psychologist selected for this position will provide services to veterans with substance abuse disorders and dual diagnosis patients (serious mental illness and substance abuse problems). The selectee has the overall responsibility for providing the full range of psychological services to veterans from all eras. The psychologist will see veterans with a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses as well as simple and complex psychosocial problems. These services include intake evaluations, the use of psychometric instruments to assess personality and cognitive functioning, rendering diagnostic opinions, treatment planning, and the provision of individual, group, and family psychotherapy, using a variety of techniques founded on evidence-based psychological principles. The selectee will develop appropriate treatment modalities for these patients and provide guidance to other staff in conducting such treatment Research The selectee may design, implement, analyze, and interpret data collected for performance/quality improvement projects. He/she may actively participate in the research of other mental health staff members. The Madison VA mental health service line has an active research arm with several principal investigators (M.D.s and Ph.D.s) who are conducting both grant funded and investigator-initiated research. Academic/Teaching/Training The selectee will provide clinical supervision to various disciplines and levels of training to include pre-doctoral psychology trainees. He/she may be involved in the training of medical students, psychiatric residents and fellows, and other graduate or post-graduate trainees, as appropriate.
