Oh, Look at the Time... By Senior Lieutenant Caine Reilly McKinsley and Senior Lieutenant Elissabeth Marksbury Caine looked over at the young woman sitting on her couch. "Are you sure I can't get you something to drink?" she asked, while pouring herself a glass of ice tea. "After all the different meetings you've had today I'm sure you must be thirsty. I know for me, I always get overly nervous every time I meet with the Captain, even though I know him well. After every meeting, I have to gulp down an entire glass of water." Elissabeth smiled, wondering if she put the counselor on edge or if McKinsley was always so talkative. She wasn't used to hearing people say so much so quickly, and she may have found it rather endearing if her head would've stopped pounding. "No, really, I'm fine. I actually just finished lunch. It's been a long time since I've undergone one of these routine "evaluations", so I'm sorry if I seem on edge. I've had a bit of a headache all day." That's an understatement... "Oh, it's completely fine." Moving over to a chair near the couch, Caine sat down and relaxed some into the comfortable material. "I'm actually very use to people being on edge or at least nervous around me, comes with position of counselor. But anyways, we're not here to talk about me, why don't you tell me some stuff about you?" Caine smiled warmly at Elissabeth and took a sip of her ice tea. Blinking just a bit at her direct approach, she said, "Well, I'm not sure what you want to know... I'm very happy here on the Avalon. I have friends and I love my job, have a lot to keep me busy. In fact, Ketchum has just appointed me acting second officer in Sierra's absence and Skyler's illness... " She just let the sentence trail away, unsure what else to say. "Wow, that's a large promotion, congratulations." It hurt for Caine to yet again be reminded of Javan's absence but she pushed those feelings away and focused back on Elissabeth. "Are you and your friends going to celebrate your promotion?" "It's not exactly a promotion... I'm just filling in until Skyler is better and Cmdr. Sierra returns. And I'm not much of a celebration type person, honestly." "Even if it isn't a promotion it's still important because when it comes time for a promotion someone will look at that and be impressed or if you apply for a different job. It shows signs of maturity in your position as well as the trust of the Captain." Caine took a sip of ice tea again, using the time to figure out how she was going to transition the conversation. "How come you're not really into celebrations? They can be so much fun." "I've not really taken time for such things, I guess. Work always seemed more important. Is more important." Caine nodded her head in agreement. "Many Starfleet officers feel the way you do, that work is the most important. Though, I've found that the old saying 'all work and no play?' well you know the rest, tends to become true. I personally put work first, but still I enjoy the fine times of relaxing and having fun, but every person is different." Caine was beginning to wonder if she should have approached Elissabeth differently but then again it took time to really to know anyone. Elissabeth nodded once, wondering what the counselor was getting at exactly. "I participate in holodeck activities... Typically things of a physical nature. It's relaxing." She hoped that would be what McKinsley wanted to hear. Lissi liked the woman but found these sessions to be rather useless. "The holodeck activities are a lot of fun." Caine noticed the time and realized that she had a meeting with Garrett in a few minutes and would have to be leaving soon. "Why don't you and I get together and do one of your favorite holodeck activities soon?" Lissi laughed slightly, "How are you at martial arts?" Caine chuckled, she had figured that Elissabeth would be want to do something of that nature and was glad that Javan had been teaching her new tricks to improve her fighting style. "Well, I'm better at boxing, but I'm half decent at martial arts. Javan has been teaching me some new stuff." Lissi's brow perked at that. "You're friends with Commander Sierra I take it?" "Actually more than just friends, but yes, we're friends. We used to get together and spar a lot, Lately I've just been practicing with computer generated opponents." Caine wasn't sure if she should mention her and Javan's full relationship but she decided that under the circumstances it was best to just go with the friends thing for now. "Ah, well I'm sure he's taught you a lot then. As soon as I finish covert ops training, we'll have to get together in the holodeck," she smiled, resisting the urge to look at her watch. "Sounds great and I look forward to getting together again." Caine stood and shook Elissabeth's hand. "I hate to run off like this but I have a meeting in a few minutes. So good luck on your training and I look forward to sparring with you." "Oh, believe me, I understand about meetings. Thank you for your time, Counselor. I assume I'm off the hook now with the 'mandatory' bit?" She was edging towards the door as she spoke. Caine laughed, "Yes, you?re off the mandatory bit. Have a good day." ___________________________________________________________________ Speed up your surfing with Juno SpeedBand. Now includes pop-up blocker!
