Not About the Past By Senior Lieutenant Elissabeth Marksbury and Junior Lieutenant Elijah Dareth Scrolling through his messages, Elijah was surprised to see one from Lt. Marksbury asking him to see her as soon as he got back. He wondered what it could be. Did she find another bug in that program? he wondered, as he made his way to the security offices. He entered her office when prompted and she smiled at him. He liked it when she smiled like that. There was something genuine about it and it made him instantly at ease. "Mr. Dareth," she gestured for him to take a seat. "How was shoreleave?" "I had a great time. We went to visit my parents in Tennesee, some friends of Melanie's in Mississippi, and then her mother in London." Marksbury's eyebrows raised slightly, but he knew she wouldn't ask who Melanie was. She was really good about that sort of thing - always there to listen, but never prying. "Melanie is my girlfriend. Lt. Redgrave, actually," he blushed slightly. "I've heard really good things about her. Excellent work on the murder case, I've been told." Elijah nodded. "And she won't hardly take credit for it, either." "Modesty is a good quality as long as it doesn't compromise your confidence." Standing, she moved around to the front of her desk and leaned against it. "I called you here because I have something for you." Eli's faced registered surprise. And Marksbury laughed. "It's not gonna bite, I promise," she said, handing him the little black box. "You mean-?" He was too flustered to say anything else. "I told you, Elijah, it's not about the past. It's about how you prove yourself now." "Wow...I don't know what to say." "Say 'thank you' when I say, 'Congratulations, Junior Lieutenant'." "Thank you," he grinned, adding the pip to his collar. Crossing her arms, she began, "I have a bit of a problem, Mr. Dareth and I was wondering if I could get your help with it." "Of course." "I'm getting ready to enter a week's worth of intense training for the covert ops team and I need to focus all my attention there. What do you think about heading up security team A in my absence?" His eyes grew large as he nodded and immediately said, "I'll do it." "Take all the time you need to decide," she remarked sarcastically and he laughed. "You're okay with it, really? No pressure or anything. I can always have Mr. Winters oversee things." "No, no, I'll do it. I'd like...I mean, thanks, Lt. Really." "Thank you, Elijah. That's one less thing I have to worry about this upcoming week. I know you'll do a good job. And I'll be available to you if you have any problems. Of course, Mr. Winters will be around as well. See me tomorrow for instuctions and updates, alright?" she asked as she moved around to the other side of her desk. "Is there anything else? Questions?" "No ma'm," he said, standing. "You're dismissed, Lt." She placed a little emphasis on lieutenant. Dareth was all smiles as he left her office. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
