Hi Fellow Austechwriters.
This takes lots of load off of the system, making your XP PC look less "Mac" like, but significantly speeding up common operations, especially those that involve any visual feats.
(Who needs animated scrolling menus, translucent cursors and smoothed / rounded window edges anyway!)
Note: Before continuing, please save all work in progress (just to err on the safe side to protect your work) and close all open applications (to greatly reduce the time this takes to kick in) before doing the following.
1. Simultaneously press the Windows Flag key + Pause|Break The System Properties dialog displays. 2. Click the Advanced tab. That tab displays. 3. In the Performance panel (top one) click Settings. The Performance Options dialog displays. 4. Select the Adjust for best performance radio button. All of the selected check boxes in the settings list are deselected. 5. Click the Apply button at the bottom right of the dialog. Your PC goes into a bit of a monochromatic wait state as its visual configuration changes. You will notice that it all looks a bit Windows NT squarer now. 6. Click OK.
Try for a while, with some applications running that you use every day.
Watch how menus snap open and shut and how windows drag and drop faster as outlines.
If you don't like this more Spartan look, you can always repeat Steps 1 through 3 above, then go back to "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" (Scary concept) or "Adjust for best appearance" (You like it slow and hungry, right?) or use "Custom" and pick what you prefer.
HTH.
Cheers,
Michael
