"Most employers are in their 30s." Do "most employers" know that? Is it an assumption only? I have problems finding statistical data about this. shonny -----Original Message----- From: austechwriter-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:austechwriter-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Erisa Linsky Sent: Tuesday, November 25, 2003 11:32 PM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: atw: Re: OT: research about older workers This is totally missing the point. The term "older" is a relative term. People seldom employ someone significantly older than themselves. They prefer workers who are only a little bit younger than themselves, that's what "older" means. Most employers are in their 30s. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Allan Charlton" <allancharlton@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, November 24, 2003 9:18 PM Subject: atw: OT: research about older workers UWS Careerhub sent this out. I thought it interesting enough to pass on. Allan -------------------- The Social Policy Research Centre of the University of New South Wales recently published some findings on employer views towards older workers. * Small businesses are the greatest source of employment for mature-age workers. * Employers actually often prefer qualities assumed to be part of the negative stereotype of older workers. Despite their reputation for favouring younger, risk-taking innovators, the study revealed a preference for a diverse workforce of intelligent, reliable, team workers with industry rather than computing experience. * Employers do not hold negative views toward older workers who have been retrenched. They view people made redundant as experienced but unlucky workers who deserve a second chance. * Employers regard mere eligibility for the age pension or superannuation as a poor reason to retire. http://www.sprc.unsw.edu.au/newreports/SPRC%20REPORT%206%2001.pdf ************************************************** To post a message to austechwriter, send the message to austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe to austechwriter, send a message to austechwriter-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" in the Subject field.
