Petra I did a badly worded survey of my group as to their device, and it seems
more than half of them are using ONLY phones, so it is something we have to
consider. I dislike the template that the person who initially set up the site
chose but it actually looks much better on the mobile. I think a lot of
optimisation is for mobile followed by tablet followed by desktop. In WordPress
I can easily display the site in all three modes, and it is very instructive.
Things I hate on desktop like fonts that are too large and excessive line
spacing are essential for mobile.

All I can say, Christine, is that I hope it's a fad.
I cannot stand being greeted by a big image carousel when I go to a website -
at least on a computer. I have a thing against movement on the screen unless
it's a movie situation. And I'm not really into the image thing either, I
prefer informative text. However, when viewing these sites on a mobile, the
small screen size eliminates any feeling of annoyance ... but then I've not
become one of those people who does as much as possible on a phone. I only use
my mobile for things other than phone calls when I don't have access to my
computer.
But maybe I'm just a fuddy-duddy and you shouldn't listen to me.
Regards,
Petra

atw: Ideas about website design and usability
I am building a quite sizeable website in WordPress and am currently using a
fairly old fashioned magazine style template. The site includes a lot of
information and some blog posts. I am putting the information on a menu with
drop down lists. (What else would a tech writer do?) I am putting the blog
posts on a front page of images on which the user clicks to read the post.
However I see that there is a totally new style that is all the rage. I
include some links below.
But my question is, although they are spectacular, are they usable, or is this
a fad that will fade over time? Are they restricted to a specific purpose like
the Witchcliffe one below?
The features are full width or very wide pages and graphics, less use of widget
margins, large boxes as well as menus for navigation, long scrolling pages.
They are very dependent on superb quality photos or images.

I have two websites to develop. One is more a directory style with information
and a blog. The other will be advertising for a housing development. I
anticipate that the former will still need an older style template but the
latter can use one of these dramatic templates.
Ideas anyone?
If anyone has an example of a template that they like the look of and that
really works, I would love to see it.
Cheers, Christine
