Well, Marg P.
Then maybe it's the macro blocking settings in Word that are preventing some functions from working.
If you are behind a secure fiewall with a readily updated antiviral screening system, you might try setting the Word Tools > Options (dialog) Security (tab) Macro Security... (button) > Security (dialog) Security Level (tab) radio button options (PHEW!) to Low.
Then lets see how you go.
Also check that your Word doc file name contains no MS-DOS illegal characters or an excessively long or complex text string. (Can stop the Visual BASIC editor from cooperating with it.)
At this point, however, it seems very likely that you might have a corrupted or infected Word document file or (even more likely, the template on which it is based, especially if this is a shared resource) and might need to do a "Maggie" to start over or revert to a much earlier version of the file, if one is available.
That aside, how long since you closed / restarted Word or for that matter, your PC. Could just do with a good brain flushing.
Running the Windows clean manager before restarting can be a good thing if all precious working document files are backed up.
Press Flag+R for the Run prompt. Type "cleanmgr" and press Enter. Then do eeverything EXCEPT compress old files. (Takes a cuple of minutes and rejuvenates your PC.)
Best of luck.
Regards,
Michael

Nope - I tried that one.
The TOC entries are entirely dead - neither Click nor Ctrl+Click works. I've also set the Page start numbers within the destination documents.
Thanks
Margaret

Dear Marg (P)
Perhaps you have neglected to deselect Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink check box in the Word Tools > Options (dialog) View tab.
