Yeah, some of it is a worry George. Though building codes are fairly strong here about being self sufficient. The reality for all the Emergency service authorities with major communication centres is to be fully self sufficient in the event of a major catastrophe. Australia and its cities regularly face big problems, flood and bushfires, and severe storms, so mostly they have generator sets, driven by huge diesel engines. I know there are problems with servicing them regularly, like filling the diesel tanks, but the basics are all there. In fact I was surprised when I had to service some where they were! Hospitals are all equipped, so are the major telcos etc, and many big commercial buildings have them too. The problem is minor outages will not bring the generator sets on, the whole grid has to go right down before they work. Hence big buildings in Sydney having power surges during the bushfires last time round. Gas and fuel pipelines have big safety valves at either end and big storage tanks too. The cut to civilian consumers is easy, emergency services always have access to supply. Interestingly, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a dream target, it is surprisingly easy to destroy the structural integrity of it to such a degree as to render it unsafe. That isn't new information either. It is all in the public domain from around the time of the second world war! Same with the Opera House too. -----Original Message----- From: austechwriter-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:austechwriter-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of George Mena Sent: Wednesday, 30 July 2003 2:43 AM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [austechwriter] OT: How To...
