When the developer says "Configuring SQL-Server" this means the package = SQL-Server, not the server that it actually goes on. So you would be = "configuring SQL server to put on the server". An equivalent you might = be more familiar with is "configuring MS Word for your PC". You = wouldn't say "configuring the MS Word for your PC". So I am thinking that ERP might actually be the program rather than the = name of the server? If so you would drop the article.=20 -----Original Message----- From: Bridget Knaus [mailto:bridget.knaus@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, May 02, 2003 3:27 PM To: 'austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [austechwriter] A nice grammatical question to end off the week! I've been queried in my use of English by a developer (how dare he!!). = I've been using the article "the" before referring to a server, he says: =20 <snip>The documentation regularly refers to ERS using a "the". For = example "Configuring the Expert Rule Server" or "Using the ERS via a .NET = Client" =20 I think this is akward. You would never see the phrase "Configuring the SQL-Server" in microsoft help. =20 It should be "Configuring SQL-Server", "Configuring Expert Rule Server" = and "Using ERS via a .NET Client"<snip> =20 The MS Manual of Style uses an article, but the help for SQL Server = doesn't. What do you think (apart from the fact he can't spell)?
