Can you see files using Windows Explorer or, if you are in another program, can
you see a file there that you should see? For example, if you save a text file
in Notepad, can you then see the file in Notepad if you look for it? I
wouldn't fool around with permissions until it was demonstrated that that might
be a cause of the problem.

You could try to change the folder settings when you're in the root (with no
items selected).
There may also be some Powershell commands that you can use in the console
window in order to check and update the attributes of this root directory.
(Shift+Context menu with "D" selected.)

WINRE is probably a recovery partition installed by the manufacturer.
Are you saying that all files are displayed as long as they aren't
located at the top-level (D:\)?
Seems a bit strange, as if the drive were a hidden folder but not the
subfolders.

This computer came with windows 10 so it wasn't an upgrade machine.

It just means listing all files with all file extensions.
Are folders shown?
Is C:\ your main hard drive and D:\ your data drive?
Are you sure that there aren't any drive letter conflicts? I ask
because my secondary drive has the letter E because D is reserved for
the optical drive.
Before upgrading to Windows 10, it was 'I' because all card readers
were also listed before it.
What is shown under e.g. "Optimize Drive".
It should list your hard drives and possibly some flash drives.

Hello.
I have found lately that audacity will not recognize files that I
have on the rot of an internal drive when I go to open them.
Here's what happens.
I copy a file to the root of d: which is my 2 tb internal drive on
windows
10 and when I go to open and browse to the location, I see all my
folders on the root drive but not the file that I copied there. It
doesn't matter what file type it is, it just doesn't see anything
in that location where a single file or group of files outside of a
directory are concerned.
the puzzling thig is that it used to work but I am unaware of any
windows update that would have made such a thing impossible.
Now, I did install something called OldNewExplorer which makes the
windows explorer look and behave more like windows 7 and I suppose
that could have been when the problems began but I honestly can't
imagine why this would be related.
I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts? I'm going to uninstall
this app and see if that makes a difference but I'd still be
interested in knowing why such a thing would happen?
