Hi
I seem to not have a good grasp of how the recording and playback meters
function. I understand what they are supposed to do, but they don't seem to
respond as the volume of a recording changes. Do I need to reset the meters
somehow before taking a measurement. During playback, the meter keeps showing
the same value even though the volume in some sections is dramatically
different. I realize that if it says "peak," then this was the maximum value
that was observed during the recording or during playback. But, when it says
"active" meaning that the process is still going on, the meter stays at the
same level even though the volume of certain sections are much lower than
others. I want to take a reading of a selection and then compare it to the
reading in another selected section. How do I do this?
Also, the keys "g" and "h" are supposed to give a reading of these meters. In
my situation, the g-key reads the playback meter, and the h-key just says "tool
dock." Sometimes neither of these keys function and just give the error that I
need to activate the meters in the View/Tool Bars menu. I get these errors even
though the tool bars are active. When this happens, the only solution seems to
be to close Audacity and start over. Sometimes I have even needed to reboot my
PC to get the g-key to read anything.
Any thoughts about this situation would be appreciated. I have a podcast that I
am editing, and some sections need to have amplification increased, but I can't
tell how much amplification to apply unless I read the meters. I of course can
guess based on what I hear, but I would rather have something that was more
accurate.
Thanks so much,
John
