Hi Ella
What I said a few days ago was perhaps wrong or perhaps half right. I have
just done some testing with my Asus notebook and discovered that I can record
through the internal mic with headphones connected. Importantly though, the
computer needs to know what I connected. My up to date machine uses Realtech
Manager. When I plug something into the earphone/mic jack, I get a dialog
asking what I connected. If I connect headphones and check that option,
Audacity can record through the internal microphone. If I connect a mic and
check the mic option, I can record through the mic and it will play back
through the internal speaker. Interestingly, when I connect my earphones that
include a mic, the Realtech Manager does not ask me anything. When I record it
uses the mic on the earphone cable and plays back through the earphones.
Depending on vintage and brand of your notebook, you may or may not have these
facilities. If you do, be sure to check the correct item when connecting. If
that dialog does not occur, my original comment is probably correct – you
cannot record through the internal mic with headphones connected.
Another option I should have mentioned the other day is a USB mic. While
frowned upon by some in terms of quality, they get around the issues of modern
input jacks.

Subject: [audacity4blind] Recording While Wearing Headphones
Hey everyone, I really need some help. I have a win 10 laptop 64 bit with a
combined headphone/microphone port. Although I have no difficulty recording
without headphones plugged in, as soon as I plug in my headphones I can't
record anything. This is true if I use another app like Voice Recorder.
Basically my computer only records what's coming out of my headphones like
screen reader speech, but I can't record anything, such as my voice. I've gone
through all my sound settings and everything looks good. Any help greatly
appreciated!
