No offense at all. It is definitely the line in and is in stereo. I'm
coming from the record outs on the back of my receiver so I know it is a
line level signal. I also have a usb interface that produces almost
identical levels when I use it as the input device. The signal doesn't
sound overdriven. It's right on the line of where it needs to be. In
other words, if I record an entire album, some songs are hitting digital
zero while others might be at minus 1 or 2. So I've gotten by with it.
I just don't like not having any headroom. I think I mentioned this in
my original email but I also get the same results with a stand alone
phono preamp that is not capable of producing anything hotter than a
line level signal.

Hi again Justin
I do not usually use line in because I have a USB mixer. I have just switched
to the line in so as to replicate as close as I can your situation.
I ran a line from the earphone socket on a radio to the line in. With the
recording level set to 0 and the volume on the radio set quite high the
recording was at minus 35 dB before amplifying. That suggests that the signal
coming from your turntable (if it is a turntable) must be extremely loud. Is
there any way of lowering the level on that device?
Apologies if the following question offends. Are you sure you are coming in
through the line in and not the mic? Using the mic input would give lots of
level and would almost certainly be in mono.

It is in audacity. The playback slider doesn't seem to affect the record level
and I wouldn't think it would. I'm hoping you can direct me to some settings
in my control panel that might allow me to reduce the signal further. The
signal does get hotter if I raise that input slider, so I know it works.

Hi Justin
Is the slider you mentioned in Audacity or in sound card settings? Either way, if it is
on 0 I am surprised anything gets recorded. My suspicion is that you are looking at the
wrong slider, but could well be wrong. The other setting to check is playback volume.
If that is set high, the signal could be coming in "hot" as they say.
It may not answer all your questions, but you may find some snippets
of interest in my audio tutorial on setting levels:

All that said, sound card settings in Windows sometimes seems like a dark art
than a science. That especially applies when there are multiple sources from
which to choose.

Subject: [audacity4blind] Record level
I have had good luck recording vinyl in to audacity both with an INport hot
wire and the line-in on the back of my computer. However, in both cases, with
the slider input at 0 I'm still getting all the signal I need. Although I'm
not really hearing any distortion, I would like to be able to attenuate it
further. I will add that I have had these same results with an outboard phono
preamp as well as the built in phono stage in my stereo receiver. I'm guessing
this is fairly common. Has anyone else had to deal with this?
