Thanks for your insight. I still have two questions though. First, do I have to
somehow select the audio I want to normalize, or will the normalize work on the
entire recording? Second, where did you get your DB figures from? When I
changed the parameter in the first box to .90 and tabbed to the next box, it
still showed a value of 50. Can I use this value? Or, what am I doing wrong?

I was not familiar with OBI, so I had to download it.
The dialog is indeed confusing. You might be used to Audacity's normalization
feature, which works with dB.
The combo box shows in contrast the target gain linearly.
You can notice that the slider also changes the content of the combo-box but
not in the same way. It is a bit rough for my taste.
Slider values:
0 % = 0.25 = -12 dB
16 % = 0.5 = -6 dB
33 % = 0.75 = -2.49877 dB
50 % = 1.0 = 0 dB
66 % = 2.0 = 6 dB
83 % = 3.0 = 9.54243 dB
100 % = 4.0 = 12 dB
The combo-box values are divided into tenth.
0.1 = -20 dB
0.2 = -14 dB
0.4 = -8 dB
0.8 = -2 dB
0.9 = -0.91515 dB
I left some values out.
The essential thing to know is that values bigger than 1.0 make no sense (the
audio would clip).
If you want to create MP3s, you should probably go below 1.0.
0.9 should be fine.
I don't know about the NAudio checkbox, I believe it is just a C library to
process the audio.

normalize dialog box in OBI, which is a program used to create DAISY
books similar to those produced by the National Library Service and other
places.
The first item in the normalize dialog is a spin box to set the
parameter to increase/decrease volume during normalize operation. The
range is from 0.10 to 4.00 and I guess you could also type in some
other number. The default setting is 1.00, and there is a note that
says a value of 1.0 means 0 DB gain. The second item is a slider to
increase/decrease volume. Right sliding increases volume during
normalize operation. Numbers range from 0 to 100, and the default is
50. Next there is a check box that says use NAudio for normalization.
This box is checked by default. Finally there are buttons for OK and
cancel.
I would love to hear from anyone who has used this version of OBI, but
I hope anyone who can help me to set these parameters properly will respond.

I am working on my annual DAISY book using OBI 4.5 RC. I think I want
to normalize the audio on my recording. In the normalize dialog in the
audio processing menu in the tools menu, there are two parameters and
a check box.
I have no idea how to set these and can find no information in the manual.
Any ideas? All help appreciated. Thanks.
