If you don't want the first track to play while recording the second, mute the
track.
Shift plus u, will mute the highlighted track.
Make sure the track you want to work with, is highlighted.
Shift plus u again will un-mute the track.
To solo a track, shift plus s.
Shift plus s again to un-solo the track.
Press enter on a track to highlight it.
Again to unlight it.
Mark.

Hi Paul
You asked, "But is there a way you can pause that first track but still keep
recording on the second track?"
The answer is a definite no. What may be helpful though is to insert a label
at the point of interest. While playing and/or recording, press control+m. If
you are not too busy with the recording, add text to the label. Later, you can
move through labels with alt+left/right arrows.
In Preferences under Track Behaviours is check both Type to Create a Label
and Use Dialog for Name of a New Label. You then only need to press control+m,
optionally write some text and press Enter to be returned to the track.
Pleasingly, the label is positioned at the point where you hit control+m, even
if you take some time to write some text.
With points labelled, you can return to them later. Depending on
circumstances/choice, you can either record on a new track (shift+r) or insert
onto an existing track. Inserting requires some digital gymnastics.

Subject: [audacity4blind] Another Question
Hello, I've had a bit of a thought. When you've got 2 tracks open, when you
are recording on the second track, you can hear what's playing on the first.
But is there a way you can pause that first track but still keep recording on
the second track? What I mean is, like if you heard something on that first
track that you want to talk about, how do you do it?
Thanks.
Paul
