Okay! It took some doing but I've got it working - as is (should?) be
traditional, I'm typing this (slowly) on my working Atreus. Now, to figure
out a keyboard layout that I can carry between it and a full sized
Ergodox...

Sorry; I've never used QMK nor dfu-programmer before. In order to
determine whether the controller is functioning, I would recommend
trying to flash it with TMK and avrdude first.
The readme at https://atreus.technomancy.us/tmk shows how to determine
which USB device to use by listing /dev/* and diffing it when the board
is in the bootloader mode; see if you can do that successfully.
