Hi all,

I recently came across this group and would like to introduce myself.

I am a technical writer of 6 years, before that a journalist and even
further back an electrician. This background has seen me writing for a
number of electrical engineering companies around Brisbane.

In my 6 years I have met almost no other technical writers and have been
forced to develop my skills in a virtual vacuum. A group like this would
be useful for writers like myself.

Most of my positions have been as the sole writer in the company and
usually the FIRST writer they have ever employed. One thing I have
noticed is how many engineering departments are glad to hire a
professional but then seem to actively oppose your efforts! As a result
I have spent much of the past six years installing a culture where the
technical writer is both an accepted and integral part of the team. I
envy those of you who have had mentors or senior writers to support them
during their first few years - I had to learn the hard way.

These days my technical writing workload has reduced due to a move into
a senior management role. I still do all the writing, I just have less
time to do it!

Like the rest of you I have had to pick up quite a few skills to perform
my job effectively - some I have formal training in and some I had to
learn myself. Besides my core writing skills (BA Journalism), I
specialise in graphic design to pre press level, media communications,
programming (Grad Dip IT), the never ending demand for websites,
translation of material/websites into multiple languages, network
administration and the electrical industry in general. If any of you out
there need some advice in these areas I'd be glad to help.

Things I'd like to know more about include techniques for maintaing
really large document sets and writing tools other than Word or
Framemaker.

Regards,

Brian O'Sullivan
