Dear Colleagues, We would like to invite you and/or members of your research group/engineering firm to apply to participate in the 6th in a series of professional development workshops offered by the Broadening Participation Committee of ASME's Division of Engineering Design (DED) for the annual IDETC. This year, our workshop will focus on "Mutual Mentoring: Moving Beyond One-Size-Fits-All Mentoring" with speaker Dr. Mary Dean Sorcinelli (see her bio at: https://www.umass.edu/ctfd/about/sorcinelli.shtml) It is listed as W8 for this year's conference. The goal of the workshop on Mutual Mentoring is to provide a professional development experience and opportunity for community and networking within the Design Engineering Division (DED) of ASME that supports and mentors underrepresented groups. The workshop is designed to provide graduate students and faculty members from underrepresented groups with professional development activities and to give them the opportunity to make connections with an international network of supportive researchers in their field. In addition to skill development, this workshop will support the development of a network of people within the community from underrepresented groups. Mentoring offers a vital contribution to a successful academic career, particularly for women and faculty of color. The most common form of mentoring has been a “traditional model,” which is defined by a one-on-one relationship between an experienced faculty member who guides the career development of an early career faculty member. Recent literature, however, has indicated the emergence of new, more flexible approaches to mentoring in which faculty build a network of “multiple mentors” who can address a variety of career competencies. In this interactive session, you will recognize potential roadblocks to success in an academic career; explore both traditional mentoring and emerging models of network-based mentoring; identify your mentoring goals, “map” your own mentoring networks; and discuss best practices in mentoring, including how to be your own best mentor. Participants MUST complete the application at the link below to be considered for this workshop and must also register for the conference as soon as possible to ensure full consideration. Student and postdoctoral participants will be reimbursed approximately $150 for travel expenses to attend the workshop.
