Subject: Soaring
We made a fall colors trip around the Pine Nuts last week. I tried to make
a stop at most of the landing spots on our way around to take a look.
Parker Carson 25NV was the first stop. After looking it over I don't think
it is safe to attempt a landing with the ships we normally fly. A 1-26
could make it in ok but it would not be easy. There is a hill on the East
side of the runway and the runway slopes down to the West. The 815 ft
estimated length would make this airport a real challenge unless landing
into a moderate West wind.
Dayton Valley looks good.
Rabbit dry lake looks good except it is now fenced and gated. I talked to
one home owner near one the gates and she said she would unlock the gate no
problem if a glider landed there. The gates and fences were put up to keep
motorcycles and off road vehicles from tearing up the dry lake. A land
sailing club owns Rabbit dry lake and needs to keep it smooth.
Rosachi Ranch duster strip looks good except the pavement is in very poor
shape. A Marine helicopter was making pattern flights so I could not get a
good photo.
Farias Wheel looks good but only has a N/S runway. Rosachi would be a
better choice with West winds in the afternoon and a second cross runway.
Topaz Ranch 43NV is now the official name for the Topaz Valley airport. Big
surprise is that the new owner has done a lot of grading and the dirt
runways are in excellent shape ! N/S runway looked great ! Even the E/W
runway looked short but good !
