Dear Anish
Attched are six chapters. 2 from the earlier lot (gatiche alekh and
padaarthaanchi rachana) and four that you sent us which you wanted as early
as possible (aalekh, ushnata ani tapman, vidrawyata (solubility) and
antaranche mojmap).
We have tried to align them all.
We shall be sending you the other two chapters you have sent us by the next
fifteen days.
It would be good if you send us the earlier chapters we had translated
(internal organs - part 2, sound and soil) so we can also bring them into
alignment..

I am sorry I did not participate in the discussions earlier, but I had
some questions about our style policy, such as- do we change the names to
more Marathi sounding ones, do we change the names of the places too (e.g.
here Hoshangabad and Powarwada), do we include the equivalent English term
in the first instance that a technical/scientific term appears in the text?

From 11th April onwards, there will be three workshops of 4-5 days in
Nashik for middle school teachers (5th, 6th and 7th) - so we are
concentrating on the overlap with the textbooks of these grades. However,
this comment from Bhas gives an idea of what we are aiming for broadly-
What we should do is, while we work class-wise, we should not strictly
focus on their text book structure/content, but instead try to give
them a broader idea of the topic(s), at a slightly higher level than
the expected level of the class room transaction. Also spend some
time on more general issues of science education and pedagogy.
Uma has identified some chapters/topics from the Maharashtra textbooks
and we will soon send you a list of the corresponding Bal Vaigyanik
chapters that need to be translated.

It was good to receive Bhas suggestions. Suhas could not meet him this
time but may be we can next time one of us is in Pune. His suggestions
gave
us a clearer idea of what is expected. Please send us the review of the
earlier chapters too. We would like to revise them all together. Unless
you
want any of them on priority. If so please let us know.
We also had problems about how strictly we had to follow the
Balbharati terminology. Bhas review makes it clear that we have to stick
by
it. This was not clear to us and probably you all were too busy to respond
to our query then. Good that it is now clear. Bhas suggestions also give
us
a better idea of the preferred house style. We will work towards that.
For future work we need to do some things as early as we can.
1) We will like to Know which chapters are already translated.
2) we would also like to get the chapter list of lessons overlapping
with Balbharati text books.
3) We will like to get the list of chapters you want translated on
priority basis for Nasik workshop and its deadline.
4) Apart from this any other priority task (revision of chapters etc)
that you may have.
This will help us plan our work better.

During last few months, esp before the Amravati training we had very
little time for translation of Bal Vaigyanik chapters into Marathi. Post
that phase, Anish has been in touch with you for some more chapters.
The entire Ashram Shala team met in Hoshangabad last week and we
felt that it will be good if both of you can take out dedicated time to
anchor this component. We expect that this exercise will take at least
six-nine months, might require more time. We don't know your other
commitments so wanted to check this out. This will entail following
- Translation of Bal Vaigyainik chapters and vetting
- If at some point the load is too much, you could identify
other translators (or individuals for vetting) and work through a
pool.
- For such outsourced translations, it is assumed that you will
check the final translation. (Eklavya will make all the necessary
payments
to these individuals).
- In case there are specific queries regarding terms, phrases or
other issues, there would be a pool (eg Bhas, Anish, Madhav etc) who
would
check out and get back.
- Final translated chapters will then be sent for layout and
used for printing as well as uploading on the Ashram Shala website.
- There might be one round of revision necessary after specific
feedback from teachers/others.
Also, we felt that it might be better to have some kind of a monthly
arrangement, if we move in this direction. If necessary Anish could meet
and discuss all these in person or I could call you up and we can
discuss
over phone.
Once we get into such arrangement, if you would like to visit some
Ashram Shalas (AS), or meet some of the AS teachers, that can also be
arranged. We are having next large training during second half of April
in
Nashik - it would be good if you are able to participate in it for a few
days to get a feel and also to get direct feedback.
