Localising LCT: Challenges and strategies in doing and promoting research and
practice
LCT Japan
Ayumi Inako, Kobe University of Foreign Studies, Japan
Thomas Amundrud, Nara University of Education, Japan
When we academics learn about a new theory with a large potential, like LCT,
there are two genuine desires that may arise: we want to use the theory in our
research, and we want to let people know about the theory so that they can also
use it. These genuine desires, however, are often met by challenges when trying
to introduce the theory to your local community from scratch, particularly when
you yourself are new to it as well. In this roundtable, we will address how
these issues are faced in localising LCT in Japan.
After reviewing the short history of LCT Japan, we will present our own
research, both using Semantics as the primary dimension of interest. Ayumi will
talk about her EAP reading classroom where she used 'semantic gravity', among
other concepts, to help students write and revise their summary writing. She
will report the instruction and feedback given to class, and share the ongoing
analysis of the original texts to be compared with two versions of students’
summary, along with their comments on their revisions. She will also discuss
challenges in using other concepts from LCT, such as axiology and Autonomy.
Thomas will then share his ongoing research investigating multimodal pedagogy
in Japanese secondary school English. He will analyse how teachers use
gestures to reduce the semantic gravity of abstract concepts. He will then
present current research and questions on the use of semantic gravity and
Autonomy to analyze classroom language teaching. Finally, we are going to
discuss challenges and strategies for localising LCT in our contexts, and we
welcome the insights from our colleagues around the world to help us make LCT
in Japan a wider endeavour.
