Hi all,
This is an email for anyone who has worked as a casual lecturer, tutor or
marker at The University of Sydney in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
(inc. Linguistics, Education etc.) in the last 6 years (from 2016 onwards).
The NTEU and the Casuals Network are pursuing a case for backpay for casual
academics in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. If you are working as a
casual academic in FASS or have worked for any period of time in the Faculty in
the past six years, you are eligible to be a part of this claim.
Our recent report The Tip of the
Iceberg<https://u1584542.ct.sendgrid.net/ss/c/wehEm_vu1NBVXOKYSqOxTFbwwzb2CnhSeh8WyO4iFAmJrE-u_N4MU2moT-WWV-vmlrEP9tc9cDgDadJ_12UusD1PnFnMJlGXqhNuQpqF7Xm56ZpJgr1apuvckVPDQCUzFdhYjjdnNmy15Iza5ld8dv2BKoNx32NJ1o82P5ZbqyCd_rj0UqtOBW5tXeaAQvjihuJQMSG0aRiMZ2-nrtJqiiEgtajp5RCXJnloV7q_B893v6gNMS1s5Xnb0OYYJ9RX08m9WyCOPmS50xxqHPPR_AM4LcY-2gsU5YWIo_6_iZYQYy0_C_dNj0owEexoUfnmxWU5FaSebYHIvAQayuhnkNyHgYdzP7beUSSJPz6uSnOkVXofclcaG3FmjV-yhNrUmUk-Yc1_dj6S4Ivt80dhhGVvC1pF9J4ItulhEWhTkXM1-8m2wvRtN3fev3n5WGWm/3cg/pOHKplxAQt2Hl514Sco5JA/h0/29SeQWa9d4MfkHjinVqkcaVU7a4dzoF1PRfMKbNdRKA>
has documented how casuals are working far more than the hours provided for in
their contract – with 90% of casual staff in the audit being underpaid for the
work they do – and this mounting evidence has led to this backpay claim.
Our research shows that many hours of administrative work go unpaid, including
attending lectures and meetings, consulting with students, replying to emails,
processing requests for simple extensions, maintaining an
eLearning/Canvas/Blackboard site, navigating online systems like myHRonline
(now Workday), building skills in online pedagogies and other work besides.
In addition, casuals in effect are paid a de facto ‘piece rate’ for marking
that undercounts the amount of time needed to properly mark students’ work and
thereby artificially limiting the number of hours casuals are able to claim.
As a result, we are concerned that the University may be in breach of the
Enterprise Agreement in its employment of casuals in FASS. In a step to redress
the additional unpaid work that casuals claim they must do and to establish the
facts of the matter the NTEU and the Casuals Network are pursuing a backpay
claim for casuals covering the last six years of work.
If you have done any casual tutoring, lecturing or marking in FASS in the last
six years you have very likely been underpaid, so sign up to the backpay claim

All casuals and former casuals are welcome, both NTEU members and non-members.
If you are not a casual yourself, please share this info with casual or former
casual colleagues at usyd you think may be interested.
At the meeting, we will provide you with information on how to fill out an
individual backpay claim, and what the process from here will be. The meeting
will also be a chance to discuss what must change in the next Enterprise
Agreement to ensure that casuals in FASS and elsewhere are no longer
systematically underpaid, and how we can campaign to win these changes.
It is time for the underpayment claims of casual academics in FASS to be heard,
and for historical injustice of underpayment to be rectified.
Please join us at one of the upcoming meetings to be a part of this important
campaign.
