Dear All,
Please find attached the Agenda for the first meeting of the Special Interest Group on the language of peace and compassion (SIG P&C).  The meeting is Dec 1, 2.30-4pm AEDT.  The zoom details are below.  Please note that the meeting invite will be coming from my business account, Coaching to Clarity, just in case this is confusing.

At the meeting, I’m hoping to tap into the wisdom of the attendees to collectively establish the Identity and Purpose of the group.  This will involve using the break-out room facility and a Google doc which we will populate both individually and collectively.  In order to share the Google doc, I ask those of you who wish to attend to RSVP by November 30 by replying to this email.  I will then be able to share the Google doc with you prior to the meeting.
For those of you that have contacted me, please know that I have gathered together your areas of interest.  There will be an opportunity in the meeting to share your interest(s) as we negotiate Identity and Purpose.  And in the cases where you aren’t able to attend, I will ensure your contribution is included.
I’ll looking forward to the meeting and working together.
Warm regards,
Elizabeth Thomson

Dear All,
At the ASFLA Annual General Meeting this year, I put the following motion to the meeting:

to establish a Special Interest Group which seeks to research and understand the language of peace and compassion. It was seconded by Shooshi Dreyfus and Rosemary Huisman and accepted unanimously.

My motivation for this is to foster and support SF linguistic research in this area to grow the body of knowledge in relation to the registers of peace, compassion and inclusion.  Adversarial language is everywhere but what about language choices which socially connect and include?    I’m reminded of the ‘empathy training’ for Andrew Lamming. https://theconversation.com/andrew-laming-why-empathy-training-is-unlikely-to-work-158050 What did he learn in his online course, I wonder?   And was his training based on any language evidence?
I’d like to kick start the SIG by inviting interested researchers to join me at the inaugural meeting to agree on the role of the SIG, its mission and structure.  The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 1 December at 2.30pm via zoom.  See the link below.

In the first instance, I will chair the meeting and send out an agenda shortly.  If you wish to attend, please reply to this email.  And if you have an agenda item, send it through.  Please note that the zoom meeting is coming from my business zoom account, thus the name Coaching2Clarity.
Looking forward to seeing you.
