Masterful, Martin!  I knew there'd be a way in Artworks.  Thank you 
very much for the clear explification and example file.

I'll get a chance to practise the technique myself now, because the 
people who drew the map have just come through with a higher-res scan 
of it.


A separate issue:
They sent four megabytes as Jpeg, 300dpi 24-bit RGB. (Attached to an 
email rather than giving a download link; we won't go on about that 
too.)  Are my Acorn eyes blind to something, or why do people in the 
Big Bad World scan black ink on white paper as 24-bit RGB?
   I normally reduce to 8-bit greyscale.  Can I safely reduce 
     even further?
